Chahkooh canyon
One of the Great Canyon in the Middle-East, that situated The eastern part of Qeshm Island is home to an amazing valley known as Chahkooh Canyon and astonishes many of the visitors with its special effects. A valley at a depth of 100 meters that will give you a new world as if you are invited to another land. The strange shapes of the colossal rocks of the canyon are the result of millennia of deterioration by rain and wind. Chahkooh’s notoriety among the locals as the dwelling of the Devil’s spawn has been advantageous to the region’s tourism. Many adventurous souls come to the canyon to visit the seat of the fiends. Hiking tours people the area remarkably during the tourist season. This is also a significant ecological site and attracts thousands of birdwatchers and nature lovers annual to its pristine sights. In the recent years, Qeshm Island has turned into a major asset for Iran’s flourishing tourism industry.
Description
In the site, there are two canyons plumbed on each other vertically. It is a narrow canyon with vertical rims and amazing formations, which seems to be representing a creative artist’s proof. In some cases, the width of these rims reaches even to 1 meter. Undefined this canyon which has been created in a layer of sand and due to the existence of marl layers, silt and lime and their dissolving erosion in holes, several beautiful ruts have been created. Undefined Since the floor of the canyon is the place on which water flows after each time raining, the locals have graved well (Chah in Persian) on it to make use of water, so the name “Chahkooh’ which means “Mount Well” has accordingly been chosen for it.
This canyon with its holes, corridors and wonder shapes amazes visitors. Chahkooh Canyon is placed in a rocky mountain which firstly appears extensive at the begging with tall walls. The canyon has formed naturally over time. You will see some gaps and holes on the rocks. Heavy rain, wind and hot sunlight have caused these natural phenomena. The acid of rainwater dissolves the Lime or Calcium bicarbonate of the rocks and burns holes in the rocks. These holes become deeper through the million years and have created many corridors in the heart of rocks. This valley has four Canyons from four sides. The walls get close to each other somewhere with a distance of 7 meters. It seems that this type of valleys related to the Anticline fractures and creating of the Salt dome. The entrance of the northern-southern canyon is wide with less slope, like a U-shaped. As you head south, the valley become narrow with more slope like a V-shaped.
Location
To visit this amazement on your travel to Iran, you must first get yourself to Hormozgan province, Qeshm Island via airplane or take the train to Bandar Abbas and take a lodge to the island. When you reach the island, take the western road of Dargahan square, after 20 kilometres you will get Chah village, and in less than a kilometre you can see the valley of Chahkooh.
