Delgosha Garden

Shiraz is known to be the city of beautiful gardens. One of its amazing gardens is the ancient garden that dates back the time of Sassanid period is called Delgosha Garden. If you visit this garden in April you will love smelling the pleasant aroma of fresh orange blossoms as the garden is full of sour orange trees. Moreover, it was registered on Iran National Heritage list in 2002.

History

The history of this garden dates back to pre-Islamic times and the time of Sassanid rule. The Garden was at the height of the prosperity in the Timur-e Gurkani period, where it is said that Timur, after seeing it, built a garden with the same name in Samarkand. This garden was also very famous in the Safavid era, so that the name of this garden is abundantly mentioned in the writings and paintings of the European tourists of that time.

Between the Nadir Shah period and the Zandy dynasty, the beautiful Delgosha Garden suffered a lot and was restored at the time of Karim Khan Zand. Mansion of  garden was built in the architecture style of the Sasanian palace of Bishapur, which is composed of a hall with four alcoves. This mansion has three floors and a porch with two columns.

When you enter the garden, as in many Iranian gardens, the water invites you to the heart of the garden, where the beautiful Paleolithic mansion is at the intersection of the North-South and East-West Gardens. The three-floor cellar mansion is now dedicated to displaying historical objects such as coins, clothing and radio.


Delgosha Pavilion

The walk leads to a residential home, standing in the center of the garden dating from the land and Qajar eras. The building has a verandah supported by two monolithic pillars. Its facade is covered with glazed tiles and plaster moldings, its doors are fine examples of inlay work and mirror work, and there are some lovely paintings on wood with flower, shrub and bird designs.


Delgosha Museum

Nowadays, the pavilion of Delgosha has changed to the Radio Museum and instruments such as coins, Quran written on the deer skins of the Seljuk period, stamps, matches and old maps of Iran from ancient times even before Achaemenid kingdom to Qajar period and 50 old radios including the radio which has worked with the oil in past.

 

Opening hours

This historical garden is open for visitors in spring, summer time from 08.30 am to 21.30 pm and in autumn, winter time from 07.30 am to 20.30 pm. The best time of visiting this ancient garden is during daylight of spring season that you can take some beautiful pictures.
