History

This place was constructed during the reign of Aq Qoyunlu, and developed in the Safavid era. It is composed of a lake and the structure of El Goli palace; both are surrounded by a large garden and tall trees. This site was registered in Iran's National Heritage list in 2009, with the registration number of 24774, due to the national value of its mansion. It was used as a summer place during Qajar dynasty when Tabriz was the official residence of an Iranian prince in Tabriz.

Tradition dates the construction of the park to the late 18th century. However, El Goli Park may have been built earlier as well; some sources suggest as far back as the 14th century. In the Qajar period this park in Tabriz was restored and high terraces were added. During the Qajar era, some streets, flowers and walk sides were set up around the park to decorate this promenade.

Description

There is also a building in the middle of the lake with traditional architecture of Iranian Azerbaijan. In south of the lake there is a hill covered by trees. Two beautiful stairways connecting the side walks to the top of the hill. At the of the hill there is a building with modern architecture (Hotel Pars building). There is also a funfair next to the park. However, after selection of Tabriz to the tourism capital of Islamic countries, in the different corners of park there are stands and logo of Tabriz 2018.

The two-story octagonal pavilion in the center of the lake is now a prestigious hangout for locals. It is the perfect place for those looking to spend a relaxing evening or enjoy a great meal. The pavilion was originally built for Sultan Yakup, a ruler of the Aq Qoyunlu dynasty. The dynasty was a tribal confederation that ruled present-day Azerbaijan, Armenia, eastern Turkey, northwestern Iran, and northern Iraq from 1378 to 1501.

El Goli Lake

The pool, because of its size, is also said to be a lake of El goli (Shahgoli), it is 5.5 hectares wide and can hold up to 720,000 cubic meters of water. The size of the lake is 200 meters, and it glows like a lagoon in the park. The depth of the pool at its deepest is 12 meters, but in the eastern corner, the depth is between 3 and 6 meters.

In the past, however, the lake was larger in size and its floor was also natural, but now its size has fallen because of a garden around it. Lake water flows from one of the branches of the Liqvan River, which runs near the Chawan village, and flows into a small stream from the south-east of the lake into it.
