It consists of Qajar (1785–1925) and Pahlavi (1925-1979) era structures, which have mostly been turned into museums that house a diverse collection of paintings from Sohrab Sepehri and Parviz Kalantari to Paul Gaugin and Pablo Picasso as well as displays ranging from Native American and Mexican artifacts to Luristan metal works and Amlash ceramics.

The Sahebqaraniyeh Palace from the time of Nasir al-Din Shah is also inside Niavaran Palace Complex. The main palace, completed in 1968, was the primary residence of the last Shah, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, and the Imperial family until the Iranian Revolution. This Complex was designed in 1337 AH (1958) by the Iranian architect Mohsen Foroughi, and following a short delay in its construction, it was completed in 1346 AH (1967) and used in 1347 AH (1968).

History

This complex has its origin in a garden in Niavaran, Tehran, used as a summer residence by Fath-Ali Shah (1772-1834) of the Qajar Dynasty. The palace was built by the order of Nasir al-Din Shah in this garden, was originally designated as the castle of Niavaran and was later renamed to Sahebqaraniyeh Palace.

During the reign of Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, all the peripheral buildings of the Sahebqraniyeh Palace were demolished, with the exception of the Ahmad Shahi pavilion (or Kushk-e Ahmad-Shahi), and the buildings and structures of today's Niavaran Palace complex were located north of the palace Sahebqaraniyeh Built. The Ahmad Shahi Pavilion was then used as an exhibition center for presents from world leaders to the Iranian imperial monarchs.

Architecture

The quadrangular design of the palace and its interior archaeological design is inspired by Iranian archeology using modern technology. Its decorations have also been inspired by the pre-Islamic and post-Islamic art. The plaster work was performed by Master Abdollahi, the mirrorwork of Master Ali Asghar, the tiling of the outer part of Master Ibrahim Kazempour and Ilia.

The building floor is covered with black stone and has an aluminum sunroof. The internal decoration and furniture of the palace were designed and implemented by a French group. In the ground floor of the building, there is a large hall, which all the rooms are situated and including a private cinema, a dining room, a guest room, a waiting room and side rooms as well as the Blue Hall.
