Reza Abbasi Museum Tehran

Tehran as the capital city of the country is home to a number of museums. Among all of them there is a museum which is known for its magnificent collection. Reza Abbasi Museum of Tehran is one of the finest collections in Iran for those who wish to trace the history of Iranian art and civilization. It was named in honor of one of the Safavid painters with the aim of collecting, studying and recognizing work of art of the skilled artists of this land.

Description

The collection includes materials from the second millennium B.C. to the beginning of the 20th century and Qajar period. It is said that, approximately 50000 items are kept in this museum but only 700 of them exhibited randomly. The building has three stories that the visitor movement has been planned to start from the third floor downward. The materials kept in the museum are exhibited in five halls: pre-history hall (the third floor); Islamic art halls 1 & 2 (the second floor); Miniature hall (the first floor); calligraphy hall (the first floor); and a hall for temporary exhibitions (the ground floor). The items in the museum are exhibited chronologically in such a way that the visitors can follow the evolution process of Persian art, civilization, technology and culture during this time.

The preservation and restoration department with two laboratories and a workshop of Reza Abbasi Museum, Tehran is dedicated to restoring and repairing the paintings, metal materials and handwritten manuscripts which is considered one of the most advanced restoration workshops in Iran; therefore, the mission here is not only restoring the items of this museum, but also they carry out restoring of the materials related to other museums.


History

This precious museum was opened to the public in 1977 under the order of former queen, Farah Diba and was named after a prominent Iranian painter who was born in Kashan. The work of this museum, which includes the brilliant history of the prehistory until the 13th century, shows the creative genius of our ancestors, that each is an indication of the way the people of Iran live in different times.


Library of Reza Abbasi Museum

The museum's library, with more than 10,000 Persian, English, French and German books, is open to museum curators, the staff of Cultural Heritage Organization, universities students and researchers. The subjects of the books mostly consist of Iranian art, archeology and classical paintings of Iran.

The books are classified according to LC classification and the system is open shelf. There are also 50 different Persian and 60 foreign magazines, and 90 different newspapers at the library. There is no book loan service at the library.
