Rudkhan castle

In the north of Iran, about 25 kilometers to the southwest side of Fuman, there is a place where you can meet the unity of the nature that is known as Rudkhan Castle. It is belonging to the Seljuk period, which is built over the forest highlands of Fuman County in the beautiful village of Rudkhan.

Description

What is more beautiful than the castle of Rudkhan, where the bricks of the monument have been observing the fate, which went past the history of this frontier and the hidden mysteries in it, to watch simultaneously the history and nature.

After crossing a mountainous winding route with dense forests, the first thing that one notices about Rudkhan castle is its big entrance gate. It sits at the two peaks of a mountain at elevations of 715 and 670 metres and contains strong fortifications and battlements at a length of 1,550 metres. The castle's 42 towers still stand intact. To reach the castle, there are hundreds of stairs to climb and that is one of the reasons this castle is also known as “The Thousand Step Castle”.


History

According to research of archaeologists, This castle in Fuman dates back to the Sassanid period. It is interesting to know the originality of the name of this monument; the castle was named to the castle of Rogan due to its location along the river in the past and renamed Rudkhan Castle over time. This ancient castle is also known among the people of Gilan and Fuman by other names such as the Rukhan Fortress, Hessami Castle, Hezarpele Fortress and Rogan Fortress. The unique feature of this castle, which attracts your attention at the very first step to this castle, is the lack of influence, conquest and access by the enemy, throughout history.


Architecture of Rudkhan castle

The castle of Rudkhan consists of two parts of the citadel (the domicile of his ruler and his harem) and Qurkhana (the place where military soldiers work for the soldiers). Citadel in the western part of the building is located in two floors and its genus is of bricks. The homesteads are dominated by the eastern side of the two floors, with a number of lighters and numerous apertures. There is also a spring between the fort and the most beautiful place. The eastern part of the castle includes: twelve entrances, jails, emergency rooms, baths and watercourses.

The western part has twelve entrances, springs, water reservoirs, bathrooms, a Shahstani shrine, and a few residential units enclosed by a tower and other buildings of this section. The 40 observation towers surrounding the castle surrounded by octagonal rooms with dome vaults. Around the walls and towers are sloping apertures that are embedded in melting and shooting. It should be noted that during the history of the castle, the enemy never penetrated and could not conquer it.
