Susa Castle

A famous castle is located in the ruins of the ancient city of Susa in the Khuzestan Province of Iran. This historical castle is made of the bricks and is called susa castle. The castle was built with the rocks and clay of the Apadana Palace of Susa and the brick of Choghaznabil. Many works have been found in this castle, such as: Hammurabi’s Law, the statue of the Queen of Napier, the pink pottery Glass of susa, the role of the mountain goat.

History

Jacques Jean Marie de Morgan came to Shush from France in 1897to conduct research and discoveries and construction of this castle began for his and his companions’ resident and maintaining the discovered ancient monuments. To this end, the highest point on Shush hills, Acropol, was selected and a castle in the form of medieval and trapezoid was built on it. The building of the castle was mainly made of the bricks and ancient parts of other different periods that were remaining around the ancient area of Shush. Its construction finished in 1912.

The castle is still used as the center of keeping and studying ancient monuments. Susa Castle was built in Qajar era about 120 years ago for the residence of French archaeologists who came to Iran to work on ziggurat near the Chaghazanbil ziggurat. About Susa Museum of Susa Castle

Susa Museum is one of the most spectacular places in Susa that attracts many tourists every year. The museum is as big as 550 square meters, built in an area of 14,635 square meters. It is located on the side of this ancient Castle and facing the monument of Daniel the Prophet. This museum is one of the most important museums of ancient Iranian art and has two large halls which feature valuable works of various historical periods. These works consist of sculptures and artifacts from Masjed Soleiman and Apadana, statues of gods and clay wall decorations. Also some of the statues and artifacts are inside the glass compartments for public visiting inside the courtyard of Susa Museum. Nowadays, the museum is open to visitors in the presence of different objects from the 5th millennium BC to the Qajar era. Indeed Susa Museum can be considered as one of the most prominent places in Khuzestan Province because it is a treasure from many years of civilization.
